Cerumen Mgmt. (Ear Wax)

Hearing Health Clinic

Clearing cerumen for clarity

Cerumen, commonly known as earwax, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. While it serves a protective function by trapping dust and debris, excessive buildup of cerumen can lead to hearing problems and discomfort. Some signs you may be struggling with a cerumen build up or blockage may be:

  • Earache: Discomfort or pain in one or both ears can be a sign of cerumen buildup, especially if it's accompanied by other symptoms.

  • Decreased Hearing: A feeling of fullness in the ear or a gradual decrease in hearing ability may indicate that cerumen is blocking the ear canal and interfering with sound transmission.

  • Tinnitus: Persistent ringing, buzzing, or humming noises in the ear can be associated with cerumen buildup, particularly if it coincides with other symptoms.

  • Itching or Irritation: Excessive itching or irritation in the ear canal can result from cerumen accumulation, as the wax may cause irritation to the delicate skin lining the ear canal.

  • Ear Discharge: In some cases, cerumen buildup can lead to a discharge from the ear, which may be yellowish-brown in color and have a foul odor.

At a hearing health check, our Audiologists can assess if you are suffering from a Cerumen build up or blockage, and provide removal by irrigation or manual method.
