Supporting community inclusion

Building on more than 30 years of experience, Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre (IDHHC) has established itself as a leading agency in coordinating Sign Language Interpreting and Captioning services, creating inclusive and accessible communication throughout Vancouver Island and across the Province of British Columbia.

We arrange Sign Language interpreting and Captioning services for non-profit organizations, businesses, municipalities, post-secondary institutions and all levels of Provincial Government to ensure meetings, workshops, presentations, events and conferences are welcoming environments that include Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing individuals.

We contract with Registered Sign Language interpreters for in-person and virtual services.  Since 2020 our Communication Services team has been entrusted with coordinating ASL interpreting services for BC Government's COVID-19 and Emergency Public announcements.  IDHHC put British Columbia on the map internationally with our booking of Deaf Interpreters on camera for these press briefings that provided accessible communication for all Deaf, DeafBlind and hard of hearing individuals.

In 2022, with the passing of the BC Accessibility Act and the lead up to it’s implementation, we have seen a significant increase in requests as businesses, organizations and Government agencies better understand their responsibilities in creating inclusive and accessible spaces and events that includes American Sign Language.

Additionally, IDHHC has a team of skilled Deaf professionals who provide ASL translations of documents, videos and PR material, enabling organizations to release accessible and inclusive content.

In the last year, we’ve worked with Theatre Skam, Kaleidoscope Theatre, Theatre Inconnu, Victoria Festival of Authors, Ghost Walks, Align Entertainment, Saanich Family Arts Day Festival, Intrepid Theatre, Vancouver Island Regional Library, Powell River Public Library, Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington, Forever Fishing in Courtenay and many more!
