The Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre, the only non-profit agency of its kind on Vancouver Island, provides leadership, innovative solutions and services through engaging and educating communities, strengthening families, and fighting isolation.
Our staff includes audiologists, interpreters, sign language experts, speech-reading professionals and more. We work together to help bridge communication gaps, improve hearing health and connect individuals with meaningful employment opportunities.
Denise Robertson joined IDHHC as Executive Director in June 2012 with a background of 20 years program and fund development on Vancouver Island.
Leslee Scott came to IDHHC as Manager of Community Services in 2015 from Kelowna where she worked for 20 years as Rehabilitation Counselor. She has worked with Deaf and hard of hearing persons in various roles since 1980.
Susanne Harnden joined IDHHC as a Community Outreach Worker in May 2011 and is very involved with Deaf Community in Victoria.
Chandra McAllister started with IDHHC 2 years ago and comes with 16 + years of employment services and health and wellness experience.
Dr. Donald MacAskill
Dr. Donald MacAskill is a registered Audiologist and Hearing Instrument Practitioner with over 28 years of Audiology experience working with the National Health Service in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada. He has worked for IDHHC for two and a half years.
Karen Ma, M.Sc., RAUD – joined IDHHC as an Audiologist in October 2017, and is excited to work with everyone in hearing healthcare.
Szilvia Korda joined the team as Communications Associate in June 2016 and has over 20 years of experience as a Communication Health Assistant and is a member of Speech-Language & Audiology Canada. In 2016 she became a certified Speech Reading instructor and facilitates Speech Reading Level 1 and Drop-In classes.
Leah LaRocke worked at IDHHC in 1997 and returned in January 2017 coordinating interpreting services. Leah, growing up with a Deaf father, has an exceptional understanding of Deaf culture and the importance of clear, fluid communication.
Brenda Curts joined IDHHC in November 2017 in reception and administration support and has over 15 years’ experience in senior administration and office management.
Alexandria Walker has a M.Ed. in Counseling, and is an active AVLIC/WAVLI member. She has worked for most of her professional life in social services and has been with IDHHC for over 20 years.
Roxanne Beatty joined IDHHC as Administrative and Hearing Health Services Assistant in July 2007 bringing 19 years of customer service and administrative assistant experience, and currently provides sound expertise in technical aids.
Janet McDonald joined the Employment Services team in May of 2016 with over 7 years in the Employment Services field, B.A. in Psychology and Life Coaching and Career Development training.
